Mothers Shaping AI · An emerging initiative

AI is being raised. We all deserve a voice.

Artificial intelligence is entering the worlds our children will inherit. Mothers and caregivers have an essential perspective, but responsible AI needs input from everyone affected by it, alongside the expertise of the people developing it.

I'm building a place for those conversations to lead to more informed choices, clearer boundaries, and greater accountability.

Founded and led by Tiffany Joy Basse, technology entrepreneur, investor, author, and mother.

The future is a shared responsibility.

The invitation

AI's future is too important to leave to a single profession.

“How was your AI raised?”

That is the question behind the initiative and my AI Threshold books. What material shaped AI? Which perspectives were missing? What behavior was rewarded? What safeguards protect the people who live with its consequences?

Mothers have experience thinking beyond this week's product release toward the people who will inhabit tomorrow. So do many fathers, caregivers, teachers, workers, researchers, and community leaders. We need all those perspectives, together with technical expertise, in the decisions about AI.

Conscious AI does not mean machine consciousness. It means developing and governing powerful AI deliberately, with attention to human rights, freedom, dignity, evidence, and the consequences of design choices.

Ask better questions.

Make advanced AI legible without demanding that everyone become an engineer.

Share lived experience.

Bring families, communities, and people affected by deployment into the room.

Demand accountability.

Turn admirable values into testing, safeguards, remedies, and real human oversight.

Five working principles

What responsible, conscious AI should protect.

These are the priorities I bring to the conversation. They are starting points to test and improve, not finished technical standards or a substitute for policy research.

1

Human agency

AI should support people's choices without quietly replacing human judgment in matters that shape their lives.

Can people understand, question, override, or appeal important AI-driven decisions?

2

Care for children

Products used by children and teens need especially thoughtful safeguards around privacy, development, dependency, and learning.

What changes when a child, rather than an adult, will bear the consequence?

3

Evidence & accountability

Safety claims need meaningful testing, monitoring, transparency about limits, and routes for correcting harms.

Who is answerable if the system fails, and how will we know?

4

Broad public participation

People who experience AI in schools, workplaces, healthcare, and family life deserve ways to influence deployment and governance.

Whose knowledge is missing from the decisions being made?

5

Flourishing without coercion

AI can help people learn, create, connect, and thrive, but must not impose a single vision of the good life on them.

How can the system help without becoming an unaccountable authority over the people it serves?

Why mothers?

Care is not a technical weakness. It is a perspective on consequences.

I'm a technology entrepreneur and investor who has spent decades building in fast-moving industries, including consulting work with Cognizant AI Lab. I am also a mother watching AI enter the daily lives of a new generation.

Those experiences pull the questions together for me: What is commercially possible? What can we verify? Who benefits? Who absorbs the risk? What will a child learn to expect from a machine that sounds caring?

This movement begins with mothers, but it is not only for mothers. Shaping responsible AI is shared work.

Parents and caregivers can ask vital questions. So can engineers, product managers, teachers, doctors, business leaders, researchers, artists, policymakers, and students. The goal is to build bridges between those who can make changes and those who live with the consequences.

Start a Collaboration ↗

Bring your voice

Start somewhere real.

The initiative is developing. These are practical ways to begin participating now, without promising an existing membership platform, mailing list, or event calendar.

01 / Individual

Share the question that matters to you.

Are you a parent, student, teacher, or community member? Tell me which AI decision you wish ordinary people could influence.

Start a Conversation ↗
02 / Community

Host a thoughtful discussion.

Bring a few people together at home, school, or work and explore what protections and opportunities they want AI to offer.

Use the Questions Below ↗
03 / Organization

Connect the conversation to action.

Technologists, researchers, schools, policymakers, funders, and employers can help turn human concerns into accountable practices.

Three questions for your next gathering

A useful conversation can begin around a kitchen table. No technical background is required.

  1. What is the most hopeful way AI could improve life for your family or community?
  2. Where should a person always retain the final decision, even if AI becomes more capable?
  3. What should an AI company have to explain or prove before you trust its system with something important?

The AI Threshold Series

The first three books in a growing series.

The opening volumes explore what shapes AI, how we can govern increasingly capable systems, and who we might become alongside them. Additional books are planned as this work develops.

Let's build a more thoughtful conversation

Have an idea, a question, or a reason to work together?

I'm interested in hearing from parents, technologists, educators, businesses, researchers, journalists, and community organizers.

You can write about your perspective, suggest a gathering, or discuss an AI advisory or speaking opportunity. Sending a note does not enroll you in a mailing list or claim a place in an organization.
